Depression is often described as the 'illness of the century'. In a world saturated with material comforts, hyperconnectivity and demands for happiness, mental suffering stands out as a contemporary paradox: the easier our lives seem to be, the more fragile they appear; the more means of communication and exchange we have, the more our sense of isolation grows; the more our technologies claim to assist us, the more our feelings of powerlessness and loss of control increase. Exploring depression therefore means questioning much more than just a mood disorder: it means examining the flaws of a civilisation and perhaps those of an idea of what it means to be human.
